Shirleys Doggie Repair

Today I have a little repair to do on a doggie doorstop. It seems he’s been in a bit of a doggie scrap and has a ripped seam on his nose.

Looking at the seam it’s quite neat and the fabric is a strong cotton calico so hasn’t frayed. It’s just a simple re-stitching of the seam. I’m not going to remove any of the old stitches, but stitch over them a few stitches before and after the tear.

I used a frixion pen to lightly draw-in the seam allowance, that will help me see it as the tear closes. Frixion pens are heat-erasable, so once finished I can remove any visible ink with an iron.

I’m using Güttermann quilting cotton in an off-white. Quilting cotton is stronger than sewing thread so I don’t expect to see this doggie again for a while (at least with this seam repair).

I started stitching three or four stitches before the tear and matching the stitch locations. This should secure the old seam from further damage. I then worked a whip stitch slowly along the seam. I didn’t pull tightly, just bit by bit and the seam slowly came back together.

I then used my small iron and the tip to remove any ink from the seam. You can see the thread ends from the original seam, I’ll cut these off once I’m happy with the repair.

Once happy, I trimmed the old treads, hid the new thread under the doggie collar and he’s done.

A quick little repair and I’m told Shirley will buy me a costa coffee as a thank you, so I think both the doggie and me are the winners here.
